Artist Development Student
Hi, my name is Sarah. I’m fifteen years old and have an older brother who I dearly look up to. I’ve lived in Colonial Heights my whole life, a small town south of Richmond. I have always loved music, but never thought I would find my passion in playing and performing. I used to swim competitively year around. After a knee injury, in 7th grade, it was clear that swimming would never be the same for me. Around this time, my brother started playing guitar and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. This fascination led me to go buy my own, and I went straight for a Ruby colored Fender Strat. After learning the basics, I fell in love with playing. Since then, I have taught myself ukulele and piano. I have found that music is a way for me to express myself and my creativity. I have been a part of a few bands/duos and through that I discovered my love of performing. I am now a solo artist and focusing on making myself a better musician.
What Passion Academy means to Sarah…
Since I have joined Passion Academy, I have always looked forward to going to my lessons each week. I started in Band Development and then began guitar and voice lessons. I am now in Artist Development. I love to be able to learn new things and make music. I have learned a lot about the recording process, and other instruments, since I began taking lessons. Artist Development is by far my favorite thing I have done at Passion Academy. The atmosphere within Passion Academy is very inspiring. The mentors that I have worked with are amazing and challenge me with each lesson. I am so thankful for the opportunities I have working with them and am looking forward to seeing where the future takes me.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
I have very diverse taste in music. Billie Eilish, Declan McKenna, Dodie Clark, and AURORA are my current favorite artists. They are not mainstream and I found them through social media. I also like Harry Styles and Frank Ocean. I enjoy classics like Abba, John Denver, Neil Diamond and The Beach Boys.
Who are some of your biggest inspirations, musical, and non-musical?
My musical inspiration is Billie Eilish. Her lyrics have such a deep meaning and her sound is very unique. She has a great sense of herself and doesn’t allow others to define her. She inspires me to write my music in my own style and to be myself.
My other inspiration would be my brother, Jeffery. He has taught me that making good decisions in my life now, will lead to successes in my future. He encourages me to always do my best and is always there to support me and cheer me on. He has set a great example for me and I aspire to be as successful as he is.
If you could follow in any musician’s footsteps, who would it be?
Harry Styles. He started out as just another unknown musician. He was thrown into One Direction while competing on a talent show and the band became a world-wide sensation. When the band split up, he has continued to be a success with a solo career. He has adapted musically to different situations and continues to grow as an artist.
If you had the ability to pick anybody to collaborate with musically, who would it be?
Declan McKenna. He has a beautiful voice. I like how he takes current events and situations in the world, and makes them into a meaningful song.
What are your plans for the future of your music?
Music will always be a part of my life. My dream would be to make a living doing what I love. I want to continue writing, recording and performing as much as I can.
